Artist Files: Changing Role of Art

Nicky Enright is an artist whose practice is informed by his activity as a world music DJ. He takes on the persona of DJ Lightbolt, a sound artist who incorporates music from all over the world. He has traveled extensively to gather his sounds, learning languages to communicate more effectively with his musical resources. In the US he applies his research by performing for audiences in nightclubs and lounges, as well as in an art context in galleries and museums. He applies his technique of researching and bringing it to people, in an attempt to reach as many people as possible in his performances and interventions. Check out Nicky's profile.

Does art have communal roots?
No doubt. Pre-historic cave paintings were made by groups over time, most likely in communal ceremonies related to hunting the very animals being painted. And there is no more communal instrument than drums and percussion (& vocal chords), all used at the dawn of music. I'd do anything to travel back in time & check it out in action...
