The Projects/Space is a Black woman-led collective and arts space based in Tucson’s Historic Warehouse Arts District. Founded by working artists Alanna Airitam, Elizabeth Burden, Elizabeth Denneau, and Amber Doe, The Projects/Space draws from intertwined artistic and cultural lineages rooted in the Black Radical Tradition and Black womanist thought. Our practices span photography, textile, multimedia installation, artistic archivy and social practice, united by a shared commitment to Black witnessing, memory, presence/ presents and futures.
In this time of escalating political violence, cultural erasure, and the dismantling of public care infrastructures, The Projects/Space is a site of socially engaged, community-responsive practices as a method of care, study, and collective survival. We hold space for building durable, transferable practices that seed long-term transformation well beyond any single project, grant cycle, or political season.
Through special initiatives and residencies, The Projects offers artists time and space to take bold risks and pursue innovative ideas without the constraints and pressures often associated with commercial art endeavors. The Space Gallery serves as an intimate venue dedicated to exhibiting contemporary art by local and regional artists. Through carefully curated exhibitions in The Space, we highlight diverse artistic voices and provide a platform for underrepresented artists to showcase their work. The gallery also hosts artist talks, panel discussions, and community events that foster dialogue and deepen public appreciation for the arts.
