Fellowship

A Blade of Grass In Fellowship gathers a working group of practitioners, collectives, and artist-led organizations to explore key facets and processes of socially engaged art. In Fellowship centers questions around how artists work and what knowledge, strategies, and solidarity can be shared.

2026 In Fellowship Cohort: On Gathering

The second edition of In Fellowship centers the act of gathering as a tool for building movements, distributing resources, and nurturing new futures. Over a year of virtual meeting, cohort members will explore artistic models in response to the conditions of our current moment. In this time of escalating crises, what structures are emerging, and what existing strategies are finding new relevance? How are artists bringing people together to further these goals?

The cohort of three artists and collectives will gather regularly over the year under the facilitation of artist and culture strategist Sage Crump to build a network of mutual support and learning.

Cohort members receive an honorarium of $25,000 and an additional budget of $25,000 to organize a gathering of their communities. This year’s work is supported by Wagner Foundation, a Cambridge, MA-based foundation committed to investing in health equity, economic wellbeing, and the transformative power of art and culture, whose partnership expands the program to include dedicated funding for each cohort member to produce these gatherings.

2025 In Fellowship Cohort: On Collective Power

In its pilot year, In Fellowship brought together three artist collectives, organizations, and networks to explore the possibilities and challenges of collective work within the context of interconnectedness and shared power. A Blade of Grass has been exploring forms of collaboration and shared power between our small staff and artist board, and as we experiment with our shape, our team has been in conversation with artists, organizers, and peer initiatives to investigate models for collective work and support for collaboratives.

Fellowship for Socially Engaged Art

The A Blade of Grass Fellowship for Socially Engaged Art was established in 2014 and concluded with its final cohort in 2020. The program supported eight artists annually with project grants of $20,000. Over seven years, A Blade of Grass partnered with 57 artists and collectives working all over the world, and amassed a library of research, films, and other resources that exemplify the important role artists can play in civic life and as catalysts for social change.
